Brockway 95s

After having skied for nearly two decades, I figured it was time to buy my own pair of skis. Forget mom and forget pop, their skis are beyond out of date. Shaggys comes blasting out of left field with their skis, and lets you know what you do and don't need. Honestly any ski from Shaggys would feel right under my feet, but the Brockway took me away. I was flabbergasted at the speed I could get from these suckers, but also the ability to carve and lay trench is nearly second to none, here. Shaggys did right, and I'm having a hard time stopping myself from buying another pair this year!!! Also, with nanomag dampening, the only time you'd ever feel a jolt or a jitter when you're flying down the slopes is if you just straight up hit a tree. Through a whole season as a Winter Park lifty, 60+ days on the mountain logged, I never had a single issue with my Brockway 174s, from the top of the mountain to the bottom, ice pack and East coast conditions to a full foot of powdery Mammothy goodness, there wasn't anything my Shaggys couldn't handle. Unless I was going too slow, ha!

All in all, would buy again. Everything from back country to park shredding to racing is possible with Shaggys. And don't fool yourself, at a price like this how can ya beat em!

Best All Mountain/All Conditions Ski

After mostly snowboarding the past 25 years, I wanted to get back in to Skiing because of my kids and because snowboarding is more and more work the older I get. I set out to find a more quality ski than I have ever owned before and that's exactly what I found with the Brockway 95's. Skiing almost exclusively in Michigan (37 ski days this year) I was looking for a ski that would be firm under foot, and be responsive for the early am groomer sessions I usually ski. I found the faster and harder I skiid, the better the Brockways responded and what a fun all around ski, that I can honestly say made me a better skiier. I only had a few 3-6 inch powder mornings, but they were also a lot of fun in those conditions as well. For the type of skiing that most people in Michigan do and the varying conditions from groomed, to crud, to ice, to softer/slusher conditions, I found the Brockway to be a very powerful ski that could handle everything. These were my first pair of Shaggy's and I am hooked. I will be a customer for life and look forward to adding a 2nd pair to my collection in the near future. If you put stock in reviews, I cant tell you how helpful the reviews and product info on this site were for me making my decistion. My skis shipped fast and I also received outstanding customer service. Regardless of where you ski or conditions you normally have, if you like to rip, Shaggy's has a ski for you.

Yooper now skiing in Maine

I’m on my second pair of Brockways, 5th year. I love them. I’m 30+ years away from my days as a collegiate ski racer. These skis can rip GS turns, but I’ve sneaked down the kids SL as well, almost cleanly. Additionally, I can ski New England hard-pack (ice), packed powder, modest bumps, spring skiing, corn, and even have used them out West. Favorite skis I’ve ever owed. I think I own the only pair in Maine, so glad I tried them 7 years ago in Marquette. I’ve been speaking them up and maybe another will show up soon. I always get comments. Hope you can come demo more here. Thanks so much.

Simply... The Best!!!

So... I took a chance and purchased my Shaggy's based solely on customer reviews, being optimistic and trusting other Shaggy's owner experiences. I noticed the quality out of the box... these aren't the cookie cutter boards that are rampant in the ski industry today, instead they are a solid pair of handmade skis! I've been on my Brockway's for two weeks now and waited to write this review until I could put this ski through several solid sessions on the snow. I lucked out and was able to ski multiple conditions (powder, crud, groomers, spring conditions and "Midwest hard pack" e.g. Ice) over the past two weeks and this ski handled it all like a champ! This is truly an awesome, solid, stable ski that can handle anything you throw at it with confidence! I found the Brockway's to be very responsive edge to edge with plenty of pop in and out of turns. I purchased mine with the NanoMAG dampening system and I am amazed at the reduction in vibration transmitted through the ski. For me, there has been a noticeable reduction in leg fatigue after a full day on the slopes! If you're on the fence about purchasing... read the reviews and take the plunge, you will be pleasantly surprised!

This review wouldn't be complete without mentioning the excellent customer service I received, from my initial contact with Jeff, to the day I received my skis. The Thompson family and entire team at Shaggy's should be proud of the product, customer care and experience they provide! Every question I had through the selection and build process was quickly answered personally by a team member from Shaggy's. I hate to sound old, but this is what customer service used to be like which is very rare to find today. This is what happens when a company takes pride in their work! Shaggy's is an awesome family company that has earned my respect and business in the future! Keep up the excellent work!!!

I love my Brockway 95's

This season (18/19) is my first season on downhill skis after previously snowboarding my entire life. I have setup my skis with NTN telemark equipment with the intention of having some reliable, fun, resort crushing, mixed snow condition skis, to be used mostly on groomed terrain with the ability to float through some thick patches on the occasional "snow day". I couldn't be happier! I also opted for the NANOMAG technology for added small bump compliance and I can really feel the stabiity when skiing in particularly rough and icy conditions as if the skis just don't mind the crud.

With such a versatile design these skis have been wonderful for me to learn on and continue to progress with, while never having to worry about skiing them "too hard". I would reccomend the brockway to any skier looking for a ski with a lot of control but something that still feels somewhat playful yet stable simultaneously.

I highly recommend these skis to any skier looking for something that just works well, looks great, and is manufactured in the U.S. on top of it all!

If you are remotely curious or interested in anything from Shaggys, just call them, or better yet, get out to a demo and see for yourself how great skiing has become with some Shaggys on tour feet!

Carbon Fiber Skis vs Fiberglass Skis - Skis Handmade in the USA

STANDARD LAYUP

Our standard layup construction includes a select cut Ash hardwood core wrapped with triaxial fiberglass and carbon fiber stringers under the core. The carbon stringers are used to increase pop and rebound energy in the ski, while complementing the predictable and torsionally rigid feel of the triaxial fiberglass.

WHICH CONSTRUCTION SHOULD I GET?

The standard layup is best suited for the majority of skiers, it blends the traditional hardwood core with an energetic feel. Skis utilizing this construction perform virtually the same as their Pure Carbon counterpart. Best for all mountain skiing with limited backcountry touring.

NANOMAG® DAMPING SYSTEM LAYUP

This method of construction incorporates a sheet of nanoMAG® magnesium into our Standard Layup that significantly reduces vibration and chatter in the nastiest conditions. The damping of the material increases edge hold and creates an exceptionally smooth ride.

WHICH CONSTRUCTION SHOULD I GET?

The nanoMAG® Damping System is suited for the skier looking for the ultimate in smooth skiing, especially when making high speed turns. This option maximizes grip on ice. Two words to describe this option are "Smooth and Stable". This will slightly reduce liveliness (vs. Standard or Pure Carbon) but gives you that Cadillac Ride!

Custom Ski Graphics

Want to personalize your skis? Design your own custom graphic and we'll print it!

We press your digital design into a plastic topsheet using the highest quality sublimation inks. During this process the ink actually becomes a gas and permeates into the plastic, actually becoming part of the plastic.

How to Design your Custom Ski Graphic

  • Your custom graphics need to be designed as a rectangle with the dimensions of 16 in wide by the length of the ski plus 10 cm long (ie Ahmeek 180 cm + 10 cm = 190 cm total). This will include both skis as a pair.
  • When designing your custom ski graphic, we recommend you use a graphic program that supports layers such as: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Corel Paintshop Pro, or if you do not have a graphics program you can use GIMP which is a free open-source program (http://www.gimp.org/).
  • Once your purchase is complete, we will send you a specific model design layout template that you can use for general placement, please remember that there may be slight shifts during pressing and to leave adequate room for that (full bleed to the rectangle)
  • Once you have your basic design done, you should paste the graphic layout provided by Shaggy's into a new layer (top layer) to see how the graphic will look with the ski cutouts and make necessary graphic adjustments. Remember to turn the ski layout layer offprior to exporting the file for print. See image below for reference.
  • The design should be done using the CMYK color space (this is how they will be printed), so if it is designed in another color space the colors may be slightly off. We cannot guarantee perfect color accuracy.
  • The design should be done in at least 150 dpi, but we recommend doing them at 200 dpi.
  • If created using Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator, the source file should be sent directly to us.
  • If a non-Adobe software is used, the files should be exported as a TIFF file, we will provide an upload link to submit the file (they are LARGE).
  • In most instances we will incorporate a small ski information emblem on the skis in an appropriate location near binding placement.

Carbon Fiber Skis vs Fiberglass Skis - Skis Handmade in the USA

WHICH CONSTRUCTION SHOULD I GET?

The standard layup is best suited for the majority of skiers, it blends the traditional hardwood core with an energetic feel. Skis utilizing this construction perform virtually the same as their Pure Carbon counterpart. Best for all mountain skiing with limited backcountry touring.

PURE CARBON LAYUP

Our Pure Carbon construction includes an ultra lightweight biaxial Carbon Fiber (+-45 deg. orientation) coupled with a slightly heavier unidirectional Carbon Fiber. A full Carbon model allows for an exceptionally lightweight and responsive ski. The exceptionally high strength and stiffness of the Carbon Fiber allows us to use a lightweight Poplar wood core, that is Select Cut in Northern Michigan. For maximum binding screw retention, we mill out the core and place an extra retention plate in the binding area. Average weight savings versus their standard counterpart is 1.6 - 1.8 LB/Pair.

WHICH CONSTRUCTION SHOULD I GET?

The Pure Carbon layup is best suited for the skier looking to often use the ski for backcountry touring where the weight savings allows for more climbing, or someone looking for the lightest ski. Many skiers have reported back that they are able to increase their on-snow time when the conditions are rough, primarily due to reduced muscle fatigue. Skis utilizing this construction perform virtually the same as their standard counterpart, however have a significant weight savings.

*Please note that due to the opacity of Carbon Fiber, skis with this construction will not have "clear windows" into the core as on some models. The windows will instead show the carbon fiber on top of the wood core. Alternatively, and based on availability you may specify to have your graphic printed on a lightweight matte finish white material. Ski graphics with "windows" to see the core, will be white instead.

We use the highest quality materials in our skis to give you the best product.

Select Cut Northern Michigan Hardwood Cores

The wood cores are the "hearts" of your skis. At Shaggy's we start out with select cut Northern Michigan hardwood, primarily Ash wood. Ash is an exceptionally snappy and responsive wood with a very high stiffness for it's density. The long grain of the wood that is developed through our bitter cold winters and warm summers gives our cores an unmatched longevity! We also us local Beech and Poplar woods for specific models. The Poplar is used in skis featuring a Pure Carbon construction skis due to it's light nature. We use Beech for a slightly smoother and less poppy ride than Ash. We proudly source our Hardwood from a Matelski's mill right down the street in Boyne Falls, MI.

Northern Michigan Hardwood for Ski Cores

Composites

We utilize a triaxial fiberglass in our standard models to wrap the core and provide both torsional and longitudinal stiffness. The fiberglass is oriented in three directions, the first parallel to the length of the ski, while the second and third orientations run +- 45 degrees to the first. We also use some of the best Carbon Fiber in the industry in our skis. When used to complement the fiberglass, a uni-directional Carbon Fiber strip is placed underneath the core which allows us to reduce the core thickness and reduce weight while adding responsiveness. When used as the exclusive composite (full Carbon) in a model, we use an ultra lightweight biaxial Carbon Fiber (+-45 deg. orientation) coupled with a slightly heavier uni-directional Carbon Fiber. A full Carbon model allows for an exceptionally lightweight, durable, and responsive ski.
Full Carbon Fiber Touring Ski Layup

Sidewall Construction

Impact resistant ABS or UHMW-PE plastic surrounds our cores and is above our edges to absorb impacts and provide smooth, stable edge hold in all snow types. We use a special blend of extra wide ABS plastic that is extremely crack resistant in every environment. We place rubber damping strips between our edges, fiberglass, and sidewalls to reduce vibration propagation and to create a flexible shear bonding layer between dissimilar materials for ultimate durability.

Carbon Fiber Skis vs MidLight Fiberglass Skis - Skis Handmade in the USA

MIDLIGHT LAYUP

Our MidLight Construction combines a laminated Ash and Poplar hardwood core wrapped with a lighter Triaxial Fiberglass and twice the unidirectional Carbon Fiber of the standard construction. This construction style reduces the weight of the ski by ~1/2 lb/pair while maintaining all the energetic characteristics of our Standard Ash construction.
